Note: Due to its hand-distressed nature, no two hats are exactly alike, and may differ from what is pictured, this includes slight variations in color and the level of distressing.Handmade and Hand-Distressed in the U.S.A.The 1865 Distressed Open Road Royal Deluxe features a genuine leather sweatband and a 4 ¼” crown outfitted with a grosgrain hat band, an eye-catching feather detail and a hat pin honors Stetson’s Western heritage-and a nod to the pioneering spirit that lives on in every hat we sell. Since 1948, it has been finished with a traditional, hand-pressed cattleman crease, and has been worn by modern pioneers and trailblazers ever since, from artists and outlaws to Presidents (including, most notably, LBJ, who was rarely photographed on his Texas ranch without his Open Road). Introduced in 1937, the Open Road was originally sold with an open crown, which could then be creased to the customer’s liking. Like all Open Roads, the 1865 Distressed Royal Deluxe easily transitions from city to country, and looks equally sharp on a woman or a man. So I paid $100 all in for the hat, probably another $40 to reblock it, all in the name of the experiment of "can a cattleman's hat be successfully re-shaped into a fedora?" Ain't no way I'm wearing any cattleman's hat here in Washington.Crafted (and artfully distressed) by hand in the U.S.A., the 1865 Distressed Open Road Royal Deluxe combines the key features of the Royal Deluxe-the supple feel, flexible finish and snap brim-with unique style details. I intend to have it re-blocked and de-stiffened to the extent possible. But my Open Road is sort of old and I wanted to buy another one, newer so I just bought one on EBay, but it's a stiff cattleman's hat, hasn't arrived yet. ![]() The Open Road launched my purchases of a number of other fedora style hats subsequently. Around here all I see are green wool outback hats worn by men in trenchcoats. It seemed to draw a lot of positive attention, largely from women, as in "that's a good-looking hat and it's gutsy to wear one these days." No one else seems to have the nerve to wear fedora hats. I had it re-blocked locally into a fedora style, and it worked great. It is the flexible style but was unshaped. The Open Road was my first hat bought at a flea market five years ago.
